Toyota Kicks Off the 5 Continents Drive Project in Thailand

with the Goal of Making "Ever-better Cars" for Today and Tomorrow

Toyota Motor Thailand Company Limited creates another important page of its history by taking part in the Toyota 5 Continents Drive Project under the concept of “Making "Ever-better Cars" Together for Today and Tomorrow”. This time a total of 9 models of Toyota vehicles will explore the roads in 15 provinces in Thailand covering the distance of 1,302 kilometers.

Toyota has strived to developing and creating“ever-better cars” that can respond customers’ preferences and exceed their satisfactions. Consequently, we have continued making various efforts in "feeling the road" and "conversing with cars" through driving around the world by our employees who are the person that make Toyota cars. Based on the knowledge they have acquired through genchi genbutsu (where employees go to the source to get the facts), participating members have shown a desire to proactively drive Toyota's creation of ever-better cars forward. That's why we have started the 5 Continents Drive Project.

The 5 Continents Drive Project commenced in Australia in 2014, then moved to North America in 2015, Latin America in 2016, Europe in 2017, and Africa in 2018. Since the project started, approximately 500 Toyota employees and members from affiliates have covered a total of 99,400 kilometers over a period of about 400 days.

Mr. Michinobu Sugata, President of Toyota Motor Thailand unveiled “By taking the steering wheels by themselves, and driving the roads all over the world, Toyota employees participating have been given valuable opportunities to gain their experiences of the roads worldwide, sharpen their senses by feeling the roads and conversing with the cars, and understand customers’ voices with their senses cultivated through the Project.

Toyota believes that such experiences will eventually enable them to develop ever-better cars in the manner that cannot be replicated on their office desks or test courses. Surely, roads train people and people build cars.”

This year, Asia will be the final stage and Toyota affiliates in Thailand are proud to be a part of this genuine 5 Continents Drive Project. We started the journey in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to cover 12,000 kilometers over a period of 80 days through 14 countries in some part of Asia through this November. Next year, the convoy will drive in East Asia and reach Japan as the final destination, aiming to bring the project to completion in time for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Mr. Michinobu Sugata, added “In Thailand, they are going to start from here Chiangmai and finish in Chachoengsao province, covering 15 provinces with a total of 1,302 kilometers in 8 days, with 36 Toyota employees from Japan as well as Thailand.

The nine Toyota vehicles, including Hilux Revo and Rocco, Fortuner, Innova, Sienta, Yaris Ativ, along with our three hybrid vehicles- C-HR, Camry and Corolla Altis, will be driven by 36 Toyota members who are specialists in product development to understand the specific conditions and situations in Thailand. We will also take this opportunity for them to meet our dealers and customers to listen to and realize the actual needs. Indeed, I highly expect that the feedbacks from the participants will be reflected into the development of our future products.

Last but not the least, you may have seen the hand-written word of “Smile” on the side-window of Hilux Revo, which was signed by none other than President of Toyota Motor Corporation, Mr. Akio Toyoda.

I trust that this will be the encouragement for the participants to drive through Thailand called as the Land of Smile. Actually, Mr. Toyoda told us that he was inspired by Thailand to come up with the global corporate slogan of “Rewarded with a smile by exceeding customers’ expectations”
