Mr. Michinobu Sugata, President of Toyota Motor Thailand Company Limited announced the car sales performance during the first half of 2019 as well as the 2019 Thai automotive outlook in the Mid-Year Press Conference held on 24 July 2019, at Ballroom, Conrad Hotel Bangkok.

Mr. Sugata revealed, “This year is another interesting year for the automobile market to test whether the good momentum can be maintained from last year. For the first six months, due to new model introductions and marketing activities made by various brands, Thai auto market has shown a positive growth at 523,770 units, representing a 7.1% increase from the same period last year.”

For the 2019 automotive market forecast, Mr. Sugata projected, “The market for the 1st half of the year has been better than our initial expectation based on the continued strength in Thai economy. On the other hand, last month June, the auto market broke down the same month last year after 30 months interval.

Therefore, we expect that the Thai consumers’ negative sentiment against the uncertain global economy may influence the market for the second half of the year, and so we remain our market forecast unchanged at 1 million units as presented at the beginning of the year. In other words, we expect that the Thai auto market will maintain 1 million unit level for 2 years consecutively.”

Mr. Sugata said, “For the first six months of the year, Toyota sales reached 171,502 units, representing a 20.8% jump over the same period last year, accounting for 32.7% market share. Our growth has come from the positive feedbacks from the market to our several new models from late 2018 to early 2019. For example, we have had “The All New Camry” with “Toyota New Global Architecture” or TNGA platform which includes a powerful and efficient Dynamic Force Engine, "Hilux Revo" with the new front-grille, “Revo Z Edition” as well as our marketing activities of “Yaris” and “Ativ”

Taking this opportunity, I would like to thank our customers for the trust and the interest shown to the model respectively. At this moment, the number of customers’ bookings for the All New Commuter reached more than 2,000 units much more than our initial expectation.

For the whole year, Toyota is determined to keep the target of 330,000 units with 33% market share as set at the beginning of the year. This figure represents a growth of 4.7% from last year. Towards our goal, we will be strengthening our product line-up with the upcoming models.

For the first half of 2019, Toyota exported a total of 138,538 units of CBU, a 5% decline year on year. We remain our CBU export forecast this year unchanged at 270,000 units with a negative growth of 8% compared to last year as a result of the ongoing difficult situations in Central and South America and Oceania regions. As for our production, our performance will be in alignment with the local and international auto market situation. As a consequence, our total production outlook continues to stand at 577,000 units, a 2% reduction from last year.”

Mr. Sugata added, “Apart from the business plans as I mentioned earlier, we still have one more important challenge, where we will transform ourselves from an automotive company to a mobility company. This means that we will seek to develop all kinds of services related to mobility.

To realize this ambition, the first one is “CU TOYOTA Ha:mo”. We initiated a study about the car sharing demands and conditions in Chulalongkorn University with the warm welcome by students, lecturers, teachers and officers as the first and last one mile mobility. We are now in a stage of collaborating with Chulalongkorn University and our co-partners to learn more about Safety & Eco-Driving Improvement as well as Autonomous Vehicle Relocation in parallel with the plan of service expansion to the outer areas of Chulalongkorn University. This car-sharing initiative is a good starting point towards Ever-Better Mobility.

In addition, one of our determinations towards a mobility company is to develop the skillful human resources. For over 56 years, Toyota has pursued our best practice of "Toyota Way" and "Toyota Production System” which can make a distinctive difference for the student at Toyota Automotive Technology College (TATC). On the other hand, the government’s direction is to encourage more student to obtain a Bachelor's Degree. That is why we have started the collaboration with the prestigious university, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi to develop an undergraduate mobility technology curriculum called “Mobility Technologist”. We believe that those who graduate from this program will become the key driving force for the country's mobility industry development.

Toyota has also taken a step forward to the ever-better society. Starting with the Hybrid EV Battery Localization Line-Off Ceremony held in early May 2019 at our Gateway Manufacturing Plant, we are now ready to produce Hybrid EV batteries for C-HR, Camry Hybrid and for the upcoming hybrid models in the future. On top of the Hybrid EV Battery Localization Project, we look into the importance of the battery life cycle management under “3R Scheme”, which stands for “Rebuild”, “Reuse” and “Recycle”. We established the facility equipped with high technology machines imported directly from Japan under the collaboration with TOYOTA TSUSHO, DENSO Thailand and Waste Management Siam, and the battery measurement process will be ready to start within next month. Toyota will be the first carmaker that initiates the battery life cycle management system in Thailand, and our business will be open to all kind of customers, not only automakers but also other industries, that we welcome to join us. I believe that the combination of the Battery Localization and the 3R- Scheme will be significant to Thai Society in terms of reducing the cost of hybrid EV batteries as well as enhancing environment protection.

Furthermore, this year marks the 15th anniversary of Toyota Mangrove Reforestation, one of the projects under “Toyota Green Town”. This year, we were highly honored by the auspicious occasion where Her Royal Highness Princess Aditayadornkitikhun graced the mangrove reforestation and coastal cleanup with her presence to support Bangkok Declaration on Combatting Marine Debris in ASEAN Region. These activities call for multi-sectors’ collaboration among the government, NGO’s, private sectors and public by bringing over 7,000 volunteers for planting over 50,000 mangrove trees. On top of that, more than 2.8 tons of marine wastes were collected, segregated, and sent for proper recycle and treatment. This movement also marks as the biggest event ever in Thailand. We think that this opportunity will be the first step for Thai society to start taking actions on biodiversity conservation and combatting the plastic wastes.

Throughout the past 15 years, we have successfully planted over 642,800 trees, helped absorb over 8,400 tons of carbon dioxide per year*, and preserved biodiversity with 128 species of animals.

* The average rate of carbon dioxide absorption by fully mature mangrove trees is approximately 13 tons/year/rai – referring to the information of ICLEI : International Council for Local Environment Initiatives - Local Governments for Sustainability (www.iclei.org), which is the international council established with an aim to foster sustainable development. Comprises over 200 organizations from 43 countries around the globe, the council works towards environmental preservation.

Throughout the past 30 years, we have been promoting the road safety as one of our commitments through various activities to initiate Good Driver Society. For instance “Safe-Eco Driving” trainings have been well accepted by our dealers, general public, students and public drivers with over 62,823 people joining the project. To make this movement sustainable, we introduced “Toyota Driving Skill Development Center” at our Toyota Driving Experience Park for sharing safe driving knowledge and improving driving behaviors.

For a sustainable economy, we have initiated “Toyota Social Innovation” project to develop the local economy by transferring Toyota’s business knowhow and practice to SMEs to help improve their productivity towards the better quality of life. So far, we have implemented the project with 16 local businesses nationwide and plan to expand it to the additional 13 provinces next year.

Mr. Sugata added, “I am deeply pleased to inform you that, this year “Toyota Gazoo Racing Team Thailand” won the 3rd position in the SP3 category at “The Nurburgring 24 hour Endurance Race” in Germany held on June 22-23 with Toyota C-HR. This Endurance Race is considered as one of the toughest in the world. Team Toyota Thailand has proven the unparalleled toughness of our C-HR and brought us the pride on behalf of Thai Motorsports fans. In fact, this achievement will inspire us to develop Ever-Better Cars.
